Orofacial myofunctional therapy can be specialized by several healthcare professionals, including medical doctors, dentists, speech-language pathologists, and registered dental hygienists—all of whom are educated and licensed providers. My own journey began in the fascinating field of dentistry, a profession filled with talented practitioners who share a common goal: to improve the health and well-being of their patients. I am deeply grateful for the people I encountered and the knowledge I gained during my time as a registered dental hygienist

Although I am no longer practicing as a dental hygienist, I continue to maintain the licensure I worked so hard to achieve. I remain deeply connected to the dental community and recognize that my success in therapy would not be possible without the incredible providers I collaborate with every day.

Dental Hygiene turned Myofunctional therapist

In 2020, the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) issued a statement in support of registered dental hygienists pursuing a career in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) and seeking advanced education in the field. While OMT is not a new practice, it is rapidly growing, and there is a significant need to expand access to care. Continued support for this field is essential.

I am proud to share that on October 2, 2024, the ADHA reaffirmed their support with the following statement:

"Dental hygienists are healthcare professionals that undergo rigorous foundational training in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathology, medical emergencies, public health, craniofacial development, histology and embryology, direct patient care and much more. Through accredited dental hygiene programs, hygienists develop an in-depth understanding of the orofacial region. With additional advanced education in orofacial myofunctional therapy, dental hygienists can provide OMT therapy safely and effectively in a wide variety of settings." (Haley-Hitz & VanGuilder, 2024)

I am proud to be part of the rapidly evolving and truly transformative field of myofunctional therapy. The knowledge and expertise I gained through my education and career in dental hygiene have been instrumental to my success in this field. I'm honored to have the continued support from the ADHA.
