Yawning, tired, sleep apnea

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) refers to a range of breathing problems that occur during sleep. These issues range from snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) and potentially advancing to sleep apnea. SDB is a prevalent condition associated with negative health outcomes, rising healthcare costs, and a decreased quality of life.

The most frequently prescribed treatment for sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. While these machines can significantly improve quality of life, they can also be uncomfortable, challenging to adjust to, and may lead to issues like dry mouth and skin irritation.

To qualify for a CPAP, patients must experience at least five complete pauses in breathing per hour. Conditions like snoring and upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) typically do not meet these criteria, leaving patients with limited options for support.

The effectiveness of myofunctional therapy for sleep apnea has been increasingly recognized in clinical studies. Myofunctional therapy could be an alternative sleep apnea therapy.
